GARY MARCUS CLARK, HISTORIAN
Gary Marcus Clark is a second-generation Los Angeles City Firefighter and the proud son of the late Gary Lawrence Clark, the 13th African American Battalion Chief in LAFD history. Appointed to the Los Angeles City Fire Department on May 1, 2017, Gary has served with distinction as a Firefighter/Paramedic and now serves as Historian on the Executive Board of the Los Angeles City Stentorians.
His Story
Deeply rooted in a family legacy of public service, Gary brings a passion for storytelling, historical preservation, and cultural pride to his role. As Historian, he is responsible for documenting the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black Firefighters in Los Angeles—ensuring that their stories are preserved and honored for generations to come.
Gary’s leadership is fueled by his commitment to justice, representation, and mentorship. He has been a strong advocate for diversity in recruitment, accountability in leadership, and equity in opportunity within the fire service. His work extends beyond the firehouse—as a respected basketball coach, mentor, writer, and poet, he continues to impact lives through service, education, and empowerment.
For Gary, this role is personal. It is a tribute to his father’s legacy and a vow to carry the torch forward—to remember, to inspire, and to lead.
